New submission category - data visualisations

2026-06-02

We are pleased to announce that CPoS is introducing a new category of contributions dedicated to data visualisations. This new category is called “A Picture Is Worth a Thousand Words”. Data visualisation in empirical research and thus also in population studies is becoming increasingly important for understanding complex relationships and presenting results in a comprehensive yet catchy way. At the same time harmonized data for comparisons become increasingly available (IPUMS, Gateway to Global Aging Data, DHS, GGS, Share, just to name a few.) Data visualisation requires appropriate data and a sound knowledge of it.

Visualisation submissions will be judged on the following criteria:

  • An efficient graphical representation of the information: The visualisation must speak for itself and should be self-explanatory.
  • The visualisation should communicate an interesting and valuable empirical finding from population studies.

Visualisation submissions should consist of a single page figure and an accompanying text of approximately 1,000 words highlighting what is interesting, valuable and new about the figure. The contribution should start with the figure and then the text should follow. A limited number of references (not more than 10) should be included. An abstract and keywords should be added. Supplementary material explaining the details of the data and methods used including code and data allowing replications of the work should also be provided. This material can be made available in a separate online appendix. Visualisation submissions will undergo a fast-track double blind peer review process.
